Corrective Exercise and Injury Rehab
As we get older, not only do our recovery times slow, but we also experience a decrease in tissue elasticity, muscle strength, and bone density, which collectively elevate the risk of re-injury.
How Personal
Training Can Help
01
Decreased Tissue Elasticity
Collagen, which provides structural support to tissues, becomes less elastic and more brittle over time. This degeneration can compromise the resilience of tendons and ligaments, making them more prone to strains and tears. For instance, the Achilles tendon in older adults often loses flexibility, increasing the risk of rupture during activities that involve sudden acceleration or deceleration.
03
Diminished Bone Density
Bones naturally become less dense and more porous with age, conditions known as osteopenia and osteoporosis. This makes them more susceptible to fractures. Activities that previously had little risk, such as falls or minor impacts, can now result in serious fractures.
05
Slower Recovery Time
Healing rates for injuries generally slow down with age. The reduced efficiency of the body's repair mechanisms means that even minor injuries can take longer to recover from, increasing the risk of re-injury as individuals may resume activities before full recovery.
02
Reduced Muscle Mass and Strength
Aging is associated with sarcopenia, a progressive loss of muscle mass and strength. This reduction impairs the support muscles provide to joints, increasing the risk of injury. For example, weaker quadriceps can lead to knee instability, heightening the chance of strains and sprains.
04
Decreased Joint Mobility
Conditions like osteoarthritis cause cartilage deterioration and joint stiffness, reducing the range of motion and increasing the risk of injuries. For instance, an older adult with arthritis might experience joint instability and pain during movements that require quick changes in direction.
06
Decreased Proprioception
Proprioception, the sense of body position in space, declines with age. This reduction impairs balance and coordination, making falls and accidents more likely. For instance, a diminished sense of proprioception can result in an older person misjudging a step, leading to a sprained ankle or similar injury.
I have a serious issue with a lower back spasm that when triggered can leave me impaired for months. I started with Justin with the intent of reducing odds of recurrence. Justin set up a very personalized program that has brought me to the point where I feel totally secure and strong with my lower back. We worked on general strength, flexibility, and strengthening those glutes, glutes, glutes. And that one magic exercise that works perfectly to make my back feel stable and strong.
